The Jones Act applies to officers and crewmembers on nearly every type of vessel or boat on navigable waters. The general rule of thumb is that a seamen must work at least 30% of the time on a vessel or vessels under the common ownership or control of his employer in order to qualify for benefits available under the Jones Act.
